How To Keep Your Boiler Running Efficiently

Keeping your boiler running efficiently can help prevent any future problems and help reduce the chances of a breakdown. By following these simple steps you can have your boiler running at maximum efficiency

Have Your Boiler Serviced

Just as you would with a car, it is important to have your boiler serviced annually. Regular servicing keeps it running safely and smoothly. This should be carried out by a registered OFTEC engineer who will check if any parts are needing to be replaced and that it has the correct mixture of air and fuel.

Keep Your Boiler Clean

Keeping your boiler dust-free can help prevent its tubes and pipes from getting clogged up and disrupting its performance. To stop this from happening we suggest giving its outer housing a clean whenever you are cleaning the house. The interior of the boiler will be cleaned during an annual boiler service and would have to be carried out by a registered engineer.

Use Fuel Additives

Using heating oil fuel additives such as Exocet Premium Heating Oil helps reduce deposits on heat exchangers and nozzles. Some benefits of using a fuel additive include:

  • Lowers carbon emissions

  • Stabilises fuel – increases its shelf life

  • Inhibits sludge formation

  • Reduces deposit build up around nozzles and on heat exchanger surfaces

  • Reduces service problems

  • Improves system efficiency

Bleed Your Radiators

Bleeding your radiator helps improve your radiators heat efficiency and can ultimately lead to cheaper bills. Doing this makes sure your boiler isn’t working harder than it should be especially during winter months when your heating is constantly on.

Flush Your Boiler Water

If you notice your radiators are still not heating after bleeding them this could be caused by sludge build-ups in your pipes that can happen over time stopping your radiators from heating properly. Eventually, this can lead to corrosion.

If your radiators have cold spots or your heating is slow to take effect your boiler and radiator you may need to power flush your system. Power-flushing sends water through your central heating system at high speed, clearing any build-ups of sludge and debris.

Turn Your Heating On

Just like a car, if your heating has not been turned on for a longer period of time, your boiler can seize up leading to costly breakdowns. Turning your heating on just once a week during the warmer months can keep it running smoothly.
