Guide To Red Diesel
What Is Red Diesel?
Red Diesel also is known as Gas Oil, Agricultural Diesel, 35 second, tractor diesel, digger fuel, generator diesel is a low taxed diesel that is widely used to operate registered off-road vehicles and machinery. Red diesel can also be used to heat homes however it is not as efficient or cost-effective as kerosene. Red Diesel is a dyed version of the more commonly known road diesel. The red marker dye was originally added to help law enforcement recognise the illegal use of red diesel and to prosecute those doing so. The Original purpose of allowing diesel engine vehicles to use red diesel was to relieve people of tax who use red diesel for machinery or vehicles that are off-road for the majority of users. So although Red diesel as the same chemical makes up as red diesel, it has around 40% less fuel duty giving it a lower price than road diesel.
Red Diesel Is Mainly Used In:
Construction-The use of heavy machinery, diggers and cranes are eligible to use red diesel.
Agricultural- The farming industry uses Red diesel for their Tractors and machinery. Tractors have the exception of being allowed on road with red diesel as long as the purpose is to reach different farmland that may be separated by public road.
Council- Lawn-mores used for cutting grass or vehicles used to grit roads are all eligible to use Red Diesel.
Industrial Heating- Used in powering schools, churches, large residential areas
Who can use Red diesel?
Red diesel is not illegal if used in off-road vehicles/machinery with a few exceptions or e.g Gritting public roads or tractors crossing from one field to the next if divided by road. If you’re caught using red diesel illegally your vehicle could be seized with a maximum fine of £500 as it is considered tax evasion.
