The first trials of using HVO renewable fuels as an alternative to home heating oil in Scotland

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), is a fossil-free renewable fuel produced from certified waste fats and oils and is manufactured by a synthesised process with hydrogen to create a greener, renewable fuel.

We strongly believe that renewable fuel alongside Kerosene and other measures have a part to play in decarbonisation and meeting climate targets.

HVO as an alternative to home heating oil (kerosene)

We are excited to announce James D Bilsland are partaking in the first trials of using HVO renewable fuels as an alternative to home heating oil in Scotland as part of the future fuels trial.

The trial will be taking place in Bilslands manager - Jodie’s home that had previously used kerosene as a form of fuel and will run for approximately 1 year to gather data through all the seasons. If all goes, well and depending on what the Government does in relation to the current C11P duty on renewable heating fuels, it may be a permanent change.

The renewable liquid fuel works well in all existing oil heating systems following a simple, cost-effective conversion process. The switch involves a simple nozzle change, pump pressure and air mixture adjustment similar to what is done at a service. The tank was deliberately run empty and the HVO in place to transfer into the tank.  The oil line was then purged with the HVO. We are happy with how the trial is progressing so far – The conversion took place at the annual service so costs were minimal and with no disruption, Jodie has the heating on as normal after a service and has had no issues.

“I believe the trial will play an important part in ensuring renewable liquid fuels are on the governments strategic planning when dealing with climate and plans for net-zero carbon emissions. This, in turn, will safeguard our industry and make sure we are part of the future and that we have an important role in reducing carbon emissions if allowed.” - Jodie Allan, Managing Director of James D Bilsland Ltd.

What Is HVO Fuel?

HVO fuel (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a form of renewable fuel that has been produced from renewable and sustainably sourced vegetable fats and oils. HVO uses hydrogen as the catalyst, which is what distinguishes HVO from biodiesel. This makes it a more clean-burning, environmentally-friendly renewable diesel alternative, without the short shelf life of regular biodiesel.

Benefits and characteristics of HVO include:

  • Extended 10-year storage lifespan with a reduced need for regular testing

  • Cuts greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%

  • Year-round performance in all seasons even in low temperatures

  • Alternative to diesel and is compatible with existing fueling infrastructures.

  • Meets EN 15940:2016 specifications - tried and tested product; it’s clean, safe and endorsed by a wide range of original equipment manufacturers.

  • Biodegradable and non-toxic

  • Zero FAME, sulphur and fossil content

HVO Fuel in Tractors

Trials have also taken place in the agricultural sector for the use of HVO in Tractors as an alternative to red diesel which has been proving successful so far. This is a straight drop-in alternative to diesel so no conversion is required and results have shown a great reduction in adblue consumption meaning there is a much cleaner burn of the fuel.

We currently supply HVO as an alternative to red diesel and DERV. Request a quote using our form below or contact us on 01360 660264 and someone will assist you.
